Customer Review: Self destruct feature not helpful

I really thought I was ready for it. Other reviewers have commented clearly on how this thing works. It is very clearly labeled and the instructions, while brief, are straightforward. That first cork was obviously not going to be a problem.
That little shroud at the bottom came down smartly and seemed to get a good grip on the bottle. Sadly, the instructions hadn't commented on its secondary function as a self-destruct arming mechanism. The smaller levers easily pushed the screw into the cork. Then I pushed down the larger levers, but just as they reached the bottom of their travel, we heard a resounding "crack" and little bits of plastic flew everywhere.
The Vacu Vin then concluded that it wasn't leaving the bottle. Those flying bits of plastic must have had something to do with its release function.
Five minutes of wiggling and futz later, we had coerced the Vacu Vin off, and it was willing to surrender the cork. I had a nice glass of Chardonnay while clicking through the return process on Amazon.
I hope the refund is as prompt as the initial delivery, and that if you try this gadget, you fare better than we did. We ordered a couple of others at the same time. That cheap little $20 Oster electric is turning out to be a great value, and the Pinzon is OK, too.

Regularly described as the "world's most advanced corkscrew!" The Vacuvin WineMaster will effortlessly uncork bottles in seconds without any twisting or pulling. Operating is simple. The WineMaster is equipped with a bottle grip that locks the corkscrew on to the bottle to leave both hands free for easy use. Moving handles with a smooth and easy action, the WineMaster both inserts the specially coated spiral and extracts the cork. To open your bottle: 1. Cut Foil 2. Grip Bottle 3. Insert Spiral 4. Lift Cork 5. Remove CorkIt's another wonder of modern technology from the folks at Vacu Vin: this corkscrew stands head and shoulders above any similar model. The tiny foil cutter stores in the top of the machine--just pop it out, squeeze gently over the top of the foil, and the foil falls right off. Next, insert the cork into the bottom of the Winemaster, with all four handles in the upright position. The corkscrew inserts itself when you pull the two smaller handles down, and you lift the cork by pulling the two larger handles. The last step: just raise all four handles again to pull out the cork--no yanking or twisting necessary! For the occasional extra-long cork, you may need to perform the steps twice--but it's still far easier than other corkscrews. You'll want to open wine just as an excuse to show off this cool gadget.
